[ Magic isn't something that's restricted to just one set of people. Anyone can learn it, in theory - but some people have that natural spark, that knack for it that puts them head and shoulder above their peers. Kei Tsukishima shouldn't have been one such person, not with the way his brother has struggled with his own magic daily, not with his family's long-standing tradition of relying on hard work to earn them reliable but not particularly noteworthy magic skills. And yet Tsukishima was one such person, a natural mage backed up by a calm, level-headed sort of cleverness. He'd been playing with wind magic since he could walk.
For a while his life proceeds in a way that's not unusual. He attends school, admires his brother, befriends Yamaguchi, and eventually he finds out that his reasons for admiring his brother are entirely made up. The same issues settle in, the same reluctance to not push towards a goal he might not be able to reach, but unlike in another instance magic isn't just a hobby or a club. It's important to his future, to his career, to his role in society. He's not about to ignore it, but he's not about to waste his time, either. So he goes through middle school without making many waves and then finds a high school that specializes in magic, one that can ensure that he'll have plenty of resources at his fingertips and nothing to hold him back or push him too far.
The issue, of course, being that the school he chooses is not only another town over, it's also exclusively for people like himself, people with a natural spark for magic. It's hard for people that lack that spark to get in, hard for even the hardest, most efficient of workers to display the sort skill needed to meet the school's standards. It's not an option for Yamaguchi, but for Tsukishima it's not an option to not go. Spring rolls around and Tsukishima simply leaves, heading off for a school with a simple goodbye and nothing as trite as a promise to see Yamaguchi again soon.
His first summer break is spent with his classmates in another part of the country, with only some time to spare for visiting with family and no time to spare for visiting old friends. New Year's and spring break goes the same way. It's not until the following summer that he finally lingers in his hometown for more than a few days at a stretch - and though it's not like he's making a conscious effort to avoid Yamaguchi, he doesn't seek him out either. They're going to different schools in different towns with a focus on different specializations now. They've got different social groups, different interests, different skills. It's been over a year. Why even bother?
It's only natural, then, that he rounds the corner on the way to the convenience store and finds himself face-to-face with none other than Tadashi Yamaguchi. Tsukshima falls still, a look of surprise flickering across his face. The air around him falls still as well as his magic flickers out and the hot, oppressive humidity of the midsummer day wraps around him like a blanket. He barely even notices. ]
Yamaguchi. [ It's not quite a greeting and not quite a reprimand because, for once, Tsukishima isn't sure what to say. ]
[Tsukishima had been his best friend for so long, after all he usually was the one to rescue him from bullies and since then they were always together. Yamaguchi had always been the opposite end of spectrum for magic. Runes and things like that were not really considered as high or useful, expect when they were needed. Regardless he had to work his ass off for them unlike Tsukki, which sometimes frustrated him with his friend's lack of caring. So when it came time to pick school Yamaguchi had a hope they could find one they could both go to and had both their specialties. He had even gathered information on a few since he would like to stay with his best friend. That kind of hope was smashed quickly one day.
After all of his hard work looking into school Tsukishima left. It was shocking enough that Yamaguchi was left without being able to say a thing. It was almost casual enough to be mistaken for a 'goodbye see you tomorrow' but it wasn't. It was then that he knew he wouldn't be at school with Tsukki and he might as well stop hoping for it.
At his own school closer to home he was able to make a few friends but nothing too close. He was still a little weird with it all. Usually Tsukki did most of the talking or he hung out with him. Though on their break it was nice to be able to not work on things and relax. As he rounded the corner he didn't expect to meet anyone let alone his best friend...could they still be best friends. Yamaguchi almost didn't believe his eyes until he heard his name.]
It's summer vacation. [ Tsukishima's tone comes out flat and to the point, like it's perfectly natural for him to come back for the summer of their second year when he'd completely skipped out on the summer of their first year. And yet, despite that, his tone isn't unkind - or at the very least, no more unkind than it ever is. They really could have just seen each other yesterday, going by his casual words.
In contrast, the level gaze he fixes Yamaguchi with isn't something his friend has been on the receiving end of in a while. It's the sort of steady, searching look he reserves to knew people and unknown factors. He's a little annoyed to find that he's actually worried, and equally annoyed to find that he's relieved Yamaguchi appears to have, at the very least, avoided getting beaten up at any point in the past ten minutes.
The look only lasts a second before Tsukishima moves to step past Yamaguchi, but that's all he needs. ]
And it's hot. I'm going to get something to drink. [ The gentle stirring of the air around Tsukishima picks up again as he steps past Yamaguchi - and it's entirely out of habit that he expands that stirring to encompass his friend as well. ]
A-Ah right! Sorry, Tsukki. [The name comment comes out all too easy, maybe a little too easy for him. It's both nice and a little upsetting. It was weird for them to pick up talking like they did before. Like nothing happened, like they were just casually walking home together yesterday. It kind of made Yamaguchi's chest hurt.
The gaze gets his attention as he looks up from the ground and then just smiles nervously. He needs to act normal right? This was his best friend...the one that he really missed a lot more than it seemed he did.
For a moment he was ready to panic that he was just leaving again before he heard the invitation in his voice.]
Huh? Oh! A drink does sound really good. [Turning on his heel he's soon beside the blond. It's almost natural to be like this again. Though he wonders what he should say in moments like this.]
It's been just like middle school. [ There's a sort of bored detachment in Tsukishima's voice - because that's exactly how he feels about his new school. Aside from the shift in focus and step up in difficulty he's not doing anything unusual or different from junior high.
Certainly not anything he finds noteworthy.
He falls silent after that and doesn't ask the same of Yamaguchi, content to focus on his walk and continue debating what he wants from the store. His body language isn't closed off, though, and there's a familiar sort of anticipation to his silence as he waits for Yamaguchi to volunteer his own stories. ]
Oh, okay. [There was that familiar bored voice of his best friend. It was nice to hear it again though at the same time he was still envious of Tsukki. Even at such an advanced school he was making it by with ease. Yamaguchi is certain the other is doing what he has to and not over exerting himself. While he was working his butt off to pass some things.
The silence is a little deafening so he does decide to break the silence.]
Mine's been good...I've been getting bullied some but I am mostly left again. [He says with a laugh at it, though he wishes he wasn't alone.]
It's been kind of hard at times, I have to stay after and practice sometimes.
[ Bullying, huh? Hearing that annoys Tsukishima to no end. He shoves his hands in his pockets, irritation evident in every line of his body language. ]
You should learn to stand up for yourself. [ Irritation is evident in his tone, too, and he slants an annoyed look Yamaguchi's way. ] It's ridiculous for you to keep getting beaten up when you're this old. [ Of course, Tsukishima knows he has something to do with that. Learning to stand up for yourself is hard when no one wants to risk your best friend's wrath long enough to pick on you in the first place. ]
[Yamaguchi expected that much from Tsukishima, he's been harping him about that kind of thing for a long time now. It's little surprise to hear it again. Though it does still make him feel a little useless for being the object of bullies.]
Sorry, Tsukki. I know, I know...I get caught up in stuff and don't notice it until it happens. [That was the truth he didn't know why he didn't yell back but most times he was just a little too meek about it. That might be a lot of the reason why bullies liked to target him.]
[ Getting 'caught up in stuff' is a much gentler way of putting it than Tsukishima would have gone with. 'Making a target of himself' seems like the more apt description, to him. His look of irritation melts into one of skepticism. ]
If you're too easy to pick on they'll just keep coming back. [ But he doesn't really feel like lecturing Yamaguchi right now. Fortunately, their arrival at the store is as good a reason as any to change the subject. Tsukishima turns his gaze forward again as he pushes the door open. ] I'll pay this time, so grab whatever you want. [ Yamaguchi had paid last time, after all. ]
[It was a good description of what he did and then became a target. So he was at least close to using the right words for it. Even if it wasn't as harsh as what Tsukki could think of.]
I know... [He lets it trail off thankful for the change of subjects. At the store front he entered walking towards the drinks. Although the offer did catch him off guard. Had they really been apart that long because this felt incredibly easy to him right now.] Thanks! I'll just get something simple tonight.
[Nothing with too much flavor in the process of grabbing his own he grabbed a strawberry soda and tossed it to Tsukki.] Here's the one you wanted right?
[ Tsukishima ends up getting distracted the moment they're through the door, attention caught by a flyer advertising some sort of festival going on the following night. He doesn't realize that Yamaguchi has gone to retrieve a drink for him until he's already tossing it his way. Tsukki catches the soda with more ease than he actually feels, mild surprise belied by his expression. ]
... Yeah. [ His favorite, in fact. ] Thanks. [ He doesn't go as far as smiling but his expression softens all the same, a little bit of that icy distance melting away. He slips into comfortable silence again as they pay for their drinks and head back out the door, and it's only then that he offers the flyer out to Yamaguchi. ]
They didn't have this festival the last time I was here. [ And though he doesn't ask for more details, the expectation is there; he's waiting for Yamaguchi to tell him more. ]
[For Yamaguchi the festival was really just something that started, he kind of forgot about it most of the time. He never really had anyone to go with so it was best to put it out of his mind.
Instead he grins when he sees Tsukki's face and he hands his own drink the the cashier before they make their way out. Clicking his can open he's about to take a sip until he sees the flyer. Blinking over the piece of paper he looks from that to Tsukki before he kind of laughs.]
Yeah they decided to start it. It's just a small spring festival though...it seems more catered to couples. I've didn't know anyone so I wasn't going to go. [Not that he would object to Tsukishima wanting to go.]
[ The one bad thing about being home for the holiday is the dreary, sluggish boredom that settles in. Normally he might not have given the festival any thought at all, especially not when it's couple-oriented. He doesn't have anything else planned, however, and even for him staying holed up in his room for much longer is going to make him scream. ]
Sure. [ He finally cracks open his soda and takes a long drink, relishing in the taste and cool temperature. The more he thinks about it the more the festival sounds like a great way to kill time - and though he won't admit it out loud, he'll be glad for an excuse to hang out with Yamaguchi without having to broach the subject of the distance between them. ]
It looks like I'll pass by your house on the way. [ He glances aside to Yamaguchi again. ] Want me to pick you up there?
[Used to being home alone he usually devoted his break time to practicing he didn't want to fall behind the others. It wasn't something he would completely admit to Tsukishima. Forever thing the other did he has to do it two fold, it was frustrating at times but he wants to place higher. Still fun on break was allowed.
Sure that Tsukki will say now he nearly drops his drink when he says sure.]
Huh? Oh, okay...we can go. [Taking a lot drink of his soda he looks to the side. He was going to go to a couple kind of festival with Tsukki... Yamaguchi can't help the heat that colors his cheeks. This was another thing he wouldn't admit to his best friend.]
Yeah, that works...do you have a spring yukata? Most the shops are selling them for this.
[ What's he freaking out about? Tsukishima wonders, though putting more than a second of thought to it brings him to his answer handily. Right. Despite that, he doesn't give it much thought. Even if it's couple focused doesn't mean it's couple exclusive. There'll be plenty for them to do and, in Tsukishima's mind, Yamaguchi is getting worked up over nothing.
The issue of what to wear is a little difficult, though. Tsukishima does have his yukata from last year, but he's also grown a bit since then. He frowns down at his soda for a moment before he responds. ]
I don't know if it still fits. I might just go in jeans. [ He wouldn't be only one there that was dressed casually, even if it is a little in defiance of the spirit of things. ]
[More than thankful that Tsukki doesn't put a lot of thought into it. Lord knows that is not a conversation he wants to get into today. Not when this is his first time seeing Tsukishima in such a long time. Best to save it for later.]
Hehe, you have gotten taller, Tsukki! I think mine still fits so I'll probably wear it. [He doesn't mind what Tsukki wears it's more excitement about even getting to hang out with him.]
Isn't there usually food at carnivals? [ His question isn't biting or sarcastic, but it is still pretty dry. Yamaguchi did always get worked up over the silliest things - and that is, in the end, why Tsukishima has always been able to get along with him. It's an endearing sort of enthusiasm.
But before he realizes it, the two of them arrive at a crossroads. Specifically, it's the one where they split up in order to head home, Yamaguchi going left and Tsukishima continuing on straight. Tsukishima pauses out of habit more than anything. There's a moment of hesitation, like he might stop and say something... but then he lifts his hand in a wave and continues onward. ]
See you.
[ And this time, it's not going to take a year and a half for Tsukishima to follow up on his farewell. He arrives at Yamaguchi's house right before sunset, dressed in jeans and a t-shirt just like he'd said he would. When he catches sight of Yamaguchi he lifts his hand in a wave. ]
Yeah but there should be some good food! [With no insult there he just laughs off the question. He was able to get excited about things but without Tsukki there it seemed most were annoyed with it. It was nice to have his friend back.
Looking towards his home, he watches Tsukki walk away and feels a little sad although the 'see you' did help it. He knows the other won't vanish again right? They were going to the same place tomorrow after all.]
See you tomorrow, Tsukki!
[Inside he breaths a sigh of relief, glad for it not being too awkward at least. The next day he puts on his yukata, though it's simple with some splashes of color. Walking out he sees the other and trots over to him waving with a grin.]</small
Yeah! I found my yukata! You ready?
Mmhm. [ Tsukishima, for once, doesn't bother pointing out that there's no point in him being here unless he is ready. He's actually in a pretty good mood tonight and perfectly content to just roll with how the evening goes. He starts off down the street, shortening his stride a little so that Yamaguchi won't have any issues keeping up. ]
The guy at the convenience store said it was supposed to last until midnight, and there's going to be fireworks at nine. [ That's plenty of time to do as they please, in other words. ] But right after the fireworks there's some sort of random pairing dance for singles. [ And going by Tsukishima's tone, that's something he hopes they can avoid. ]
[It was more a habit to ask, they could have stopped to get water or things like that. Yamaguchi just figured it was good to ask that sort of thing after all. Quickly he catches up to his friend and chuckles a little as they walk. Of course Tsukki was the same as always.]
Yeah? Fireworks would be great to see! [They could play some games and all. He was glad he brought his small backpack for holding cash or other things.] Eh? Really? [All too easily he can tell he doesn't want any of that.]
We could always head home afterwards? You know you're welcome to spend the night at my place, my parent left for some trip.
[They could watch tv or something, if he didn't want to deal with couple dance things.]
I don't mind waiting if you want to dance. [ His tone is a little contemptuous, but not outright disparaging. He won't begrudge Yamaguchi any sort of fun he wants to have, especially not when Tsukishima can make his own fun by privately mocking all of the other terrible dancers.
Normally Tsukishima is rather calm about accepting invitations, and doesn't agree to anything without putting thought into it. This time, however, his response is nearly immediate. ] Staying at your place sounds fine. [ Getting in that late he definitely won't be able to avoid his brother; staying at Yamaguchi's is just safer. ]
Huh? Aha, no I'm fine...I'm not good at dancing. [Besides he would rather not dance with some stranger. It would be more fun with Tsukishima but he's sure they both might suck at it...or at least he will and step on Tsukki's feet.]
Okay! [Maybe there was more excitement in that than he should shown. He was glad that the other didn't say no though, they could spend the entire night together now.]
The festival isn't too far at least. We should grab something to eat when we get there.
